Review: Transformers PCC Steamhammer & Grimstone

During my trip back home for Thanksgiving, I stopped by at WalMart on Black Friday for a little shopping. I really wasn’t looking for much, but decided to stop by at the toy aisle anyway. Lo and behold, there were a few of the newest Transformers Power Core Combiner 5-packs waiting there with a 15 dollar price tag. If it wasn’t for the price reduction, I probably would have passed on these like I did on the repaint commander wave. Based on the last few waves, I really was on the fence with being a completest or even collecting this line at all, but the 15 dollar price tag let me give them a shot. Of course, when I went to check out, the machine couldn’t recognize the UPCs so I’m wondering if I got them before street date? Will Grimstone with Dinobots and Steamhammer with Constructicons make or break my PCC collecting lust? Here are the reviews.

Grimstone with Dinobots

Alt Mode: If you look at the 5-pack sets that came before this wave, you’d notice that there really wasn’t any strong relationship with the colors used between the commander and his drones. Grimstone and the Dinobots, however, look like they are all part of the same team since they share the same color scheme as the original Dinobots. I generally think that it’s really hard to screw up a Dinosaur transformer’s alt mode since they have all been really awesome. This poor Slag imitation proves me wrong. Grimstone’s Triceratops mode is pretty crappy. It’s crest sits really low to the body and his hind legs just make this mode look wrong in every way possible. This is definitely the weakest part of the toy. The drones on the other hand are fantastic. They’re fairly large compared to the other drones that came out before and have a lot of details sculpted in. I wish there was a little more playability to them but I understand why they can’t, since they need to be stable enough to form limbs. Also, random note, it seems like Hasbro has used a similar type of plastic that Fansproject has used this whole time. I wonder if it’s a cost saving thing… because sometimes this plastic feels a lot more brittle than before.

Robot Mode: To transform Grimstone from Triceratops mode to robot mode, you just move his arms and legs around and crack the hide in half. The transformation sequence is super simple, so don’t expect any head scratching here. The robot mode feels somewhat solid, with his eyes being the highlight of this mode. The flaws exist in his gimpy hands and really weird feet/legs. I originally found the robot mode to be really great, but after playing with it a few times, it’s just slightly above average. Still not bad for a PCC toy.

Gestalt Mode: The best thing about this mold is the Commander Power-Up mode with the drones attached. This is one solid combiner and easily one of, if not the, best in show. Since the entire squad is molded in the same colors, the combined mode looks super cohesive. I really like the Spinosaurus head being the hand in this mold. The feet are both really bulky and surprisingly works well for him. The head reveal is very cleverly done as well. Lastly, of course mine’s going to have a problem. Grimstone’s PCC connection points are loose and the only thing keeping it standing upright is friction and gravity. Not a good combination for a bulky combiner.

Overall: Grimstone and the Dinobots is in my opinion the greatest PCC set to date. I feel like Hasbro has gotten into their groove by now, and are going to churn out some fantastic toys. I was really tempted to quit collecting the Power Core line, but Grimstone basically brought me back. Sure these limbs might look odd on other commanders, but this team should be left as is. Buy on sight.

Steamhammer with Constructicons

Alt Mode: Steamhammer and the Constructicons is also a set that seemingly goes well together, despite the individual pieces being colored differently. Like the Dinobots above, the Constructicons share the same team name after another popular team. Steamhammer reminds me a lot of Sledge considering both construction vehicles have claws in the back. One thing that’s interesting is that several of these components have weathering dry brushed on them, this adds a level of realism that has been severely lacking in this toy line. Steamhammer as a bulldozer is very solid, and the rest of the drones are well made as well. I don’t think I’ve run into any problems with these.

Robot Mode: Transforming Steamhammer from bulldozer to robot mode is complicated but satisfying. In robot mode Steamhammer is pretty awesome. The neon green and black color scheme is pretty bad ass and only makes this toy look cooler. It kind of reminds me of Dirt Bossnow that I think about it. His head, a bitch to pull out of torso, also reminds me of Mudslinger’s. Normally I’d complain about the obtrusive backpack of his, but since his PCC heel spurs keep him from being top-heavy, I’ll let that slide. The two downfalls to this figure are that the flaps that his arms are connected to don’t sit flush with his torso. I could have gotten a lemon in that regard, but i seems as if the holes for the pegs are just a hair smaller than they should be, preventing the pegs to snap into place. Lastly, there are vehicle bits hanging from Steamhammer’s forearms and these bits really hinder the arm poseability. Poor execution here, but it’s otherwise a really solid robot mode. He is quite the midget though. I will mention that I don’t know where the minicon peg would be on this mode as opposed to the Commander Power-Up Mode.

Gestalt Mode: Turning Steamhammer into the Commander Power-Up Mode is solid just like his other transformation. It’s a really good mode which is only enhanced from the giant shovel that was hanging off his back. The biggest improvement here is that Steamhammer’s drone arms have hands with fingers and even an articulated wrist on the Drill Drone arm. That’s actually really awesome here. I do find it weird that his Front End Loader Drone arm is a lot longer than the Drill Drone arm, but I can manage since I’m beginning to understand what they’re trying to do with these guys. I don’t know what it is, but one of these legs does seem longer than the other as well.

Overall: Steamhammer and the Constructicons are another great example of the PCC line. Seriously, like I mentioned with Grimstone, Hasbro really knocked these two out of the park. Steamhammer and the Constructicons don’t gel quite as well as Grimstone and his Dinobots do, but overall the parts just fit really well together. The feet look like feet, and the hands look like hands… That should eliminate all the criticisms that people have about it. Not only that, but the individual parts are fantastic. If Grimstone’s combined mode doesn’t convince you, Steamhammer’s individual modes should.

I'd always wanted to get the CrazyDevy The King's Power Parts for my G1 Predaking. But everytime I see the total cost of all the parts, I back out.

Recently I happen to chance upon someone selling his used CrazyDevy parts on local eBay at good price. So I jumped at the chance to finally get them.

TFC Hercules

The last 2 components for TFC Hercules - Neck Breaker (Bonecrusher) and Mad Blender (Mixmaster) - were released just before Lunar New Year. I'm glad to have gotten them and to finally assemble Hercules aka Devastator!

So is TFC Hercules worth it? Each component bot is equivalent to Voyager class, but cost almost 3 times more. I'll also probably spend a bit more on Reprolabels to enhance this big boy further. Still, I have no regrets about getting this. You just have to assemble them up to form Devastator to see why he commands such high price.

Shockwave arrives to Transformers 3

In the original comic series from the 80's the Decepticons are led by evil Megatron (number 68 in the all time greatest villains list), but after failing to occupy planet earth and defeat the Autobots, an unknown Decepticon named Shockwave appears, far more superior than Megatron and one who is motivated not by greed or wickedness, but only by cruel logic.

Shockwave notifies Megatron it is logical to replace him because he has failed in his war against the autobots, and when Megatron refuses Shockwave humiliates him in one of the strongest battle scenes of the Transformers series - in front of all of his warriors.

Megatron becomes irrelevant (but kept alive) while Shockwave, the unstoppable one eyed robot who turns into a huge cannon, becomes the leader of the Decepticons (it takes a long while until he disappears in battle against the Dinobots).

Shockwave, is probably the most popular character for true transformers fans (probably second only to Soundwave) and is about to make his appearance in the new Transformer film: Dark Of The Moon.

I hope the movie will not turn him into a sad joke like it did to Megatron in chapter 2.

Actually… I'm hoping the flaws in movie number 2 will be fixed, the effects will be easier to watch, the zoom level will change a bit to make it easy to understand what is actually happening and that the story will not end like Indiana Jones.

Still, regardless to all the issues I have with the Transformers movies – I can't wait to be in the premier.

Shockwave | Transformers

Transformers director, Michael Bay has revealed that Shockwave will be the main villain for the upcoming Transformers 3. Besides Shockwave the new love interest of Shia La Beouf will be Rossie Huntington-Whiteley. Megan Fox, the original main actress in the movie has left Transformers after she had issues with director Michael Bay.

Transformers 3 will be released July 1, 2011 and will be released at the same time tat three other superhero movies will be released including Thor, Captain American and Green Lantern. Fans and critics are hoping that Shockwave Transformers will be better than the sequel. Michael Bay himself said that he was not pleased with Transformers 2.

Shockwave have undergone several transformations during the Transformers timeline not because it was intended in the storyline but because Shockwave Transformers had a trademark issue with Hasbro. This character had also been known Shockblast for some time.

The character of Shockwave is that of a scientist plotting to overthrow Megatron and take command of the Decepticons. During both the Transformers movie, he is perceived to have been left in Cyberton. Shockwave is distinguished by a laser cannon in lieu of one of his hands and his distinctive face, which is featureless save a single robotic eye.


Transformers Animated Shockwave

He is the Decepticon's military commander. All of his actions are carries with the cold, brutal, clarity and perfection of someone not being run by emotions but by pure mechanical and artificial intelligence thinking. Shockwave had been one of the most effective Decepticon in finding ways to effectively eliminate its enemies with less damage to him and his team.

With this in mind it seems that Transformers 3 will indeed be something to watch out. ShockwaveTransformers begins July 1, 2011.
